FirstGroup has won the franchise to run West Coast Main Line intercity trains, despite opposition from its own shareholders, fears over the financial viability of its other rail operations and legal action by rival bidders. It will take over on 8th December 2019 The government announced that First, the majority partner in a joint venture with the Italian state operator Trenitalia, will take over intercity services on the London-Glasgow line from December. Lancashire County Council have published a document investigating when an intense rain storm hit the county in November 2017, which affected 900 homes, and reveals the shortcomings that allowed it to happen. The storm, travelling from the Irish Sea coast at Blackpool north-easterly to Lancaster, caused extreme downpours. More than 900 homes and other premises were flooded, with 436 homes internally flooded and 70 households evacuated overnight in Galgate.
