Lancaster Central Public Library is part of the Lancashire County Council Library Service. It is a bustling community hub with activities, classes, events and resources for a very diverse range of groups and organisations.
Whenever I walk in there, there is someone playing music, people playing games or toddlers singing songs or storytelling or choirs with cakes. It’s a big, beautiful building, well refurbished, with a more sociable coffee and reading area downstairs and a big quiet Sanctuary upstairs, a local archive room, a room with rows of people busy on computers and a not-so-quiet children’s area where, if you time it right, you can catch a storytelling. In the evenings and weekends there are regular theatrical and music events.
This Library has lots of good PCs connected to the People’s Network and Public Wi-Fi. It has full disabled access, with a lift and disabled parking on Sun Street next to the rear entrance. It also has a range of meeting rooms for local groups and events.
It has extensive stock of fiction, non-fiction and reference (including local studies) material. You can also borrow large-print books, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs, box-sets and e-books. Search the library catalogue.
There is also a Seed Library for local gardeners & growers to share & save seeds (inc. heritage varieties) from their own patch of earth.
The Library offers a regular programme of activities, classes, groups and performances for all ages from babes in arms to senior seniors.
Lancaster Library pioneered the award-winning Get It Loud in Libraries regular music gigs project.

The library offers scanning, printing and photocopying facilities. There is a hot drink vending machine (and sometimes a cake stall), public toilets and baby changing facilities.

All Lancashire County Council libraries will be closed on bank and public holidays and some extra statutory dates.
Please note that the public computers are switched off 10 minutes before the library closes.
Access and parking
There are no parking facilities at the library apart from a bicycle park, but there are car parks locally. There are disabled car parking facilities near to the library.
There is level access to the library, as well as a lift inside for easy access to all levels.
